Workplace inspections and audits are a key part of monitoring the effectiveness of an organisations safety management. Whether it’s a construction site inspection or a legal compliance audit Compass can provide an auditing and inspection service that is relevant to your business. Compass carry out audits and inspections for a variety of organisations, including construction, engineering, waste and recycling, transport, social care, schools and religious buildings and on behalf of clients, insurance companies and external organisations.
An audit is a formal review of your health and safety management and includes the following documents:
- Health and safety policy
- Procedures relating to health and safety
- Risk assessments
- Training records
- Accident data
- Records
- Premises and plant or equipment records
The audit will compare what is stated in the policy or procedure is actually happening in practice. The auditor will look for evidence of compliance and highlight where there are gaps in the system. The audit report will include a list of recommendations and an action plan.
Inspections are a systematic and through check of the physical condition of the workplace, including any relevant records. The inspection will consider issues such as welfare, access and egress, dust, work at height, people’s behaviour and systems of work, PPE compliance, lighting, slips and trips hazards, compliance with relevant safety procedures. An inspection by an external individual can highlight issues that persons familiar with the workplace have got used to.

This will be agreed with you prior to the inspection or audit. We can audit against existing company standards, legal compliance, ISO standards or CDM requirements.
What form will be used?
We can either use your organisations existing inspection form, a Compass template or we can work with you to agree a template that is suitable and relevant to your business.
Is a scoring system used?
We can use a scoring system or a Red-Amber-Green system to identify weaknesses and prioritise actions.
How long will the report take?
An inspection report will be completed and issued within 48 hours and an audit will be issued within 5 working days.
Do you carry out audits on behalf of insurance companies?
Yes, we carry out health and safety audits for insurance companies and are happy to work alongside insurance providers in auditing and evaluating risk.
Who will complete the inspection or audit?
