“I had Just Finished My Masters Degree” – How Apprenticeships Can Benefit Academics
Amy Macphie’s Case study
Level 4 Fire Safety Inspector

Why did you choose to do an apprenticeship?
It was a chance to develop my learning after university and to keep my knowledge growing whilst earning a wage.
When enrolling on the apprenticeship, what level position were you in?
I had just finished my Masters degree and was looking for employment.
Did you have reservations about doing an apprenticeship as an adult? If so, what changed your mind?
I had no reservations when starting an apprenticeship as an adult, I saw it more as an opportunity for growth and development for myself and a good way to enter the real working world.
What have you achieved since starting your apprenticeship?
I have achieved my NEBOSH Fire Safety Certification!
Has doing the apprenticeship helped you to develop any so called soft skills?
Doing the apprenticeship has helped my confidence grow as I interact with a number of different departments and people. This has also helped my communication skills grow as I sometimes have to explain fire legislation to those who are unfamiliar with some of the legal terminology.
What are your career goals post apprenticeship?
I would like to progress in the fire safety sector with hopes of one day working in fire investigation.
